Since 2013, CSB has successfully established 6 schools for refugee children and teenagers in the southern Malaysian state of Johor, which is located near Singapore. The majority of children attending our Learning Centres are Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, however, our doors are open to all refugee children regardless of race, religion or ethnicity. In total, we have over 500 children attending our Learning Centres, from 5yrs to 19yrs.
In Malaysia, refugees have no legal status as there are no laws that define what their rights are. As a result of this, refugee families in Malaysia live in fear of being arrested for immigration offences. There are over 180,000 refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia, including over 15,000 in the state of Johor. Children are unable to attend proper schools and many are unable to complete basic schooling. Refugees often have had their education interrupted or have not received an education at all which is why CSB Learning Centres are crucial.
Our schools are recognised Learning Centres under UNHCR (United Nations Refugee Agency). The Malaysian Ministry of Education has also approved CSB as ‘Alternative Schools’ in Malaysia. Both Primary and Secondary levels are taught and we are currently working on the UK Cambridge IGCSE qualification for our Secondary level. Classes offered include: English, Maths, Science, Bahasa Melayu (the Malaysian language), Music and Arts & Crafts.
Our schools are run by dedicated teachers, volunteers and refugees themselves. We are also supported by many generous partners and individual supporters in Malaysia, Singapore and globally.
Our hope for the future is to continue to grow so that we can reduce the number of out-of-school refugee children in Johor. Every child deserves hope. Every child deserves a future. Every child deserves an education. Education Changes Lives.
Now, with opportunities for the students to attend university in the Philippines under the Complementary Pathway program - where they get full scholarship makes our mission even more meaningful.
