The National Society of the Colombian Red Cross operates within the framework of Law 852 of 2003 and Law 875 of 2004 and is a private humanitarian aid institution of a special nature par excellence in the country, legally recognized in Colombia since 1916, and whose purpose is to prevent and alleviate the suffering and protection of people affected by occasional contingencies , protecting the lives, health and dignity of people in times of armed conflict and in other emergencies, promoting voluntary work and the availability of service by members of the Movement, promoting and defending human rights, International Humanitarian Rights and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
